SM Mudroom and Laundry Room – Novi, Michigan

This laundry and mudroom serve as the family’s main entry into the home, just off the garage before entering the kitchen and living room. The transitional space sets the tone for the rest of the home with bright white custom cabinets and wainscoting, solid walnut counter & bench seat and energizing task lighting to illuminate both folding and footpath travel at night. With such a high traffic zone, we took great care to maximize organization at every turn. Hidden cabinets, an extra deep bench with pull out drawers below and baskets above for odds and ends keep the space organized and fully functional while looking incredibly polished.

The solid black walnut countertop features a bookmatched edge buildup, finished with Waterlox tung oil. The undermount stainless steel sink lends to the clean lines of this transitional craftsman space. Natural light from the full height windows in the opposing kitchen is reflected in the glass tile backsplash to add life and dimension to this small space. Flush-mounted undercabinet lighting is ideal for task work and making any small space feel larger. The low-wattage lights are perfect for footpath lighting at night as this room is the entry from the garage. Wainscoting seamlessly integrates into the custom cabinetry and door trims for a uniform custom look.

Hidden cabinets maximize storage behind this bench seat. The extra deep black walnut bench seat allows for two rows of shoe storage in both the pullout drawers and floor below. Conversion varnish on all white surfaces creates the ultimate tough finish for this heavily used space. Natural tones in the porcelain floor tiles hide dirt from shoes and let a mudroom be a mudroom. The design called for a shelf to hold baskets to keep the small space organized and streamlined. Once the clients toured a few stores and found just the right style baskets, we built it to be the right depth. Baskets are a great catch-all for winter gloves, shin guards, dog leashes and everything else in a family’s active lifestyle.
